Acrylic Court Coating: Layers, Application and Price per m²

Acrylic coating is a sports surface system applied over an existing concrete or asphalt slab. This page sets out how the system is built up, which substrates it can go on and what drives its price — in measurable figures.

What Is Acrylic Court Coating?

A surface system of liquid-applied layers that cure and harden one over another.

Acrylic coating is a sports surface system made from water-based acrylic resin mixed with silica sand and drawn over an existing hard substrate in successive coats. Unlike rolled or tiled surfaces it forms in place, so it has no joints, no seams and no risk of lifting at an edge.

The whole system measures between one and five millimetres. This is the most misunderstood thing about acrylic: the coating is not a structural layer, it follows the behaviour of the slab beneath it. Over a sound slab it lasts ten years; over a settling slab it cracks along the same line within a year. That is why the most important section on this page is not the price but substrate suitability.

It is the most widely used outdoor sports surface because it carries four properties at once: ball bounce is identical at every point of the court, the surface is non-porous so it dries quickly after rain, the colour layer resists UV, and a worn area can be renewed as a patch without stripping the whole court.

Layer Build-Up

The standard system has five layers, the cushioned system nine. The section below shows the order of application: numbering runs from the bottom up.

  1. Existing reinforced concrete slab or asphalt 10 – 15 cm

    This carries the coating and it is the layer that determines the life of the system. Acrylic is only a surface layer of one to five millimetres; if the slab beneath cracks, the coating cracks along the same line. That is why the age, fall, crack condition and water retention of the slab are measured before application.

  2. Surface preparation and crack repair variable

    The surface is washed down; moss, oil and dusting areas are removed. Cracks narrower than three millimetres are filled with acrylic patching compound, wider and moving cracks are bridged with a membrane. Hollows that hold water are taken out at this stage with levelling mortar — a coating does not correct a hollow beneath it, it only covers it.

  3. Acrylic primer 0.1 – 0.2 mm

    It works into the pores of the concrete and prepares the surface the upper layers will grip. Essential for adhesion on new, smooth steel-trowelled concrete; on porous asphalt it is usually unnecessary. A coating applied without primer can lift in sheets in its first freeze-thaw cycle.

  4. Rubber-granule cushioning layers 2.0 – 3.5 mm

    Cushioned system only

    Present only in the cushioned system. Rubber granule mixed with acrylic binder is drawn in several successive coats. Part of the jumping and landing load is taken by the surface; knee and ankle fatigue starts noticeably later. Hardness is tuned by adding or removing coats.

  5. Resurfacer coats 0.4 – 0.6 mm

    Silica-sand-filled acrylic, drawn in at least two coats and in crossing directions. It does two jobs: it takes out millimetric undulation in the surface and builds the texture the colour coat will grip. Skip it and the colour coat goes straight onto concrete, consumption rises and the surface looks patchy.

  6. Two coats of pigmented acrylic 0.3 – 0.5 mm

    The visible surface of the court. The proportion of silica sand sets ball bounce and shoe grip: more sand slows the surface and increases grip. The pigment resists UV, so fading under sun is slow. Two coats rather than one thick coat is a deliberate choice — curing stays controlled and the colour comes out even.

  7. Line paint 0.1 mm

    Textured acrylic line paint applied with templates and masking tape. FIBA dimensions govern for basketball, ITF for tennis; several sports can be marked on the same court in different colours. The paint sits on top of the surface, so no change in level is felt along a line.

Layer thicknesses in the section are exaggerated proportionally for legibility; the real total is 1.0 – 1.5 mm for the standard system and 3.0 – 5.0 mm for the cushioned system.

Two Coating Systems

The difference is the cushioning layers. Intensity of use is the only thing that decides between them.

The most common coating system for outdoor courts. Primer, resurfacer and colour coats are drawn in sequence over the existing reinforced concrete slab; the total thickness never exceeds a millimetre and a half, yet it seals the surface against water, sun and wear. The same system is used for basketball, tennis, volleyball and multi-purpose school courts — only the line layout changes.

School yards with a sound slab, municipal park courts, shared areas on housing estates, tennis courts and training courts used a few hours a week.

Points to consider: It is a hard surface with low impact absorption; in primary school yards, where falls are frequent, a cushioned system suits better. The soundness of the slab beneath is decisive: a cracking slab takes the coating with it, which is why substrate suitability is measured before application.

Rubber-granule cushioning layers are added between the primer and the colour coats. It carries every property of the standard system and adds impact absorption: the load of jumping and landing is taken by the surface rather than the joints. This is the system chosen for club and academy courts in daily training use.

Club and academy courts, facilities in use several hours a day, primary school yards and projects where player health is the priority.

Points to consider: Cost per square metre is noticeably above the standard coating and application takes two to three days longer. On housing-estate courts used a few hours a week that difference does not pay for itself; the standard coating is enough there.

Is your court’s coating worn out?

Where the slab is sound but the colour has faded and the lines have worn away, the substructure is left untouched and only the surface is redone. On courts that need repair the scope is wider than coating alone: crack repair and level correction are part of the work.

Which Courts Is It Used On?

Acrylic coating is a sport-agnostic surface system. Only the line layout and the sand content of the surface change.

FIBA

Basketball court

Acrylic is the default surface for outdoor basketball courts. Ball bounce is identical at every point and, because the surface is non-porous, play resumes soon after rain. Lines are marked to FIBA dimensions; 26 × 14 m is also common in school and estate courts.

Does Your Substrate Qualify?

Acrylic coating goes over an existing hard substrate. The seven criteria below are each measured during the site survey and the result is reported in writing.

Criteria are measured on site; this table is so that you can assess your own court beforehand.

Application Conditions

Acrylic application depends on the weather. Work does not start until the thresholds below are met; this is the single thing that stops a coating lifting in its first season.

10 – 35 °C

Temperature

The figure measured is the SURFACE temperature, not the air, and it must be rising throughout application. Below ten degrees the acrylic film does not cure properly; above thirty-five it dries before it has spread and leaves marks. In summer, application moves to early morning.

At least 24 dry hours after application

Rainfall

A coat that has not finished curing will be marked and washed if rain reaches it, and that coat has to be stripped and redone. The programme is therefore built around the forecast, and work does not start when there is a risk of rain.

Below 85%

Relative humidity

High humidity lengthens curing between coats and the programme slips. Working close to dew point leaves dull patches and colour variation on the surface.

2 – 6 hours

Waiting between coats

Each coat must reach touch-dry before the next is drawn. The time varies with temperature, humidity and wind; no fixed figure can be given, the decision is made by checking the surface.

48 – 72 hours after the final coat

Opening to use

The surface is walkable a few hours after the final coat but reaches full hardness in two to three days. A court opened early shows shoe marks and line smearing.

Not applied in strong wind

Wind

Wind carries dust and leaves onto the surface and dries the edges of a coat early, leaving a lap mark. On outdoor courts this is the second most common reason for postponing work, after temperature.

In most of Turkey these thresholds compress the coating season into April–October. Site surveys and planning are done through the winter and application is scheduled for spring. A contractor offering to coat in winter either does not know the conditions or intends to accept the job and postpone it.

The Application Process

On a standard court the whole job runs to nine steps and about a week. The day counts below assume a 500 m² court.

  1. Site survey and substrate measurement

    Before application

    We attend the court; levels and falls are measured, a crack map is drawn up, ponding and surface soundness are tested. The result of this measurement is reported in writing — if the slab does not qualify, it is said at this stage and not after the job has been taken.

  2. Surface cleaning

    Day 1

    The surface is pressure-washed; moss, mould, oil and loose material are removed. Dusting areas are cleaned mechanically. The washed surface is then left to dry completely.

  3. Crack repair and level correction

    Days 1 – 2

    Narrow cracks are filled with acrylic patching compound, wide and moving cracks bridged with a membrane. Hollows found to pond water are taken out with levelling mortar and screeded flat.

  4. Primer application

    Day 2

    Acrylic primer is applied in a single coat by roller or spray. It works into the pores of the concrete and prepares the surface the upper layers will grip; on porous asphalt this step is usually omitted.

  5. Resurfacer coats

    Days 3 – 4

    Silica-sand-filled resurfacer is drawn in at least two coats, in crossing directions, with a rubber squeegee. Each coat is dried before the next is applied. Millimetric undulation in the surface closes at this stage.

  6. Cushioning layers

    Days 4 – 5

    Applied only in the cushioned system. The rubber-granule acrylic mix is drawn in several coats; the number is set by the hardness required. The standard system does not include this step.

  7. Colour coats

    Days 5 – 6

    Two coats of pigmented acrylic, drawn in crossing directions. The proportion of silica sand sets the pace of the court and was decided at the survey. Two thin coats give a more even colour than one thick coat.

  8. Line marking

    Days 6 – 7

    Dimensions are set out on the court with tape and laser, masking tape is run and textured line paint applied. FIBA dimensions govern for basketball and ITF for tennis; on multi-purpose courts the sports are separated by colour.

  9. Curing and handover

    Days 7 – 9

    The surface is left to cure for 48 to 72 hours. At handover the line dimensions are checked, the maintenance instructions are given and the scope of the warranty is handed over in writing.

Durations depend on the weather; rain, low temperature or high humidity can extend the programme. A firm schedule is issued in writing after the survey, with the forecast taken into account.

Six Factors That Set the Price

What decides whether you land at the bottom or the top of the band, in order of weight.

Condition of the existing substrate

Impact: The decisive item

On a clean, flat and sound slab the work starts straight at the primer. Where crack repair, level correction and surface opening are needed, these are separate labour and material; this is the item that pushes a job to the top of the band.

System and number of layers

Impact: High

The standard coating is five layers; the cushioned system takes that to nine. Material, labour and the duration of the job all rise.

Size of the court

Impact: Medium

Site set-up, haulage and the crew day rate are fixed items; on a small court the same cost is divided over fewer square metres, so the unit price rises. On large courts the reverse applies.

Number of line layouts

Impact: Medium

On a single-sport court, line marking is a day’s work. On a multi-purpose court each additional sport brings its own masking and painting round; on a three-sport school court this item can double.

Colour arrangement

Impact: Low

A single-colour surface is the most economical. Different colours for the playing and run-off areas add masking labour, though the material difference is small.

Location and access

Impact: Low – medium

Out-of-town work raises haulage, accommodation and crew mobilisation costs. Where plant and material cannot reach the court — a narrow passage, an upper-floor terrace — everything is carried by hand and labour rises.

When Acrylic Is Not the Right Choice

Acrylic does not suit every court. In the four cases below another system gives a better result — and we have named which one.

Children’s areas with frequent falls

Acrylic is a hard surface with low impact absorption. In nurseries, primary school yards and courts sharing space with play areas, poured rubber (EPDM) is clearly ahead on safety. Cushioned acrylic is a middle course, but it does not reach EPDM’s level.

Multi-purpose areas that will also host football

If five-a-side football is also to be played, artificial turf is the better choice: the risk of slipping and falling is lower than on acrylic. Ball bounce for basketball suffers in exchange — which sport takes priority has to be settled at the outset.

Competition-standard indoor halls

Where official matches will be played indoors, the standard required is sprung-batten timber flooring. Acrylic can be applied indoors and is used in training halls, but it does not substitute for the competition standard.

Courts with a failed or settled slab

A coating is surface work, not a structural remedy. Where there is settlement, deep cracking or persistent ponding, the slab has to be dealt with first. A coating applied under these conditions cracks along the same line within a year and the work is paid for twice.

Colour Options

Colour has no effect on playing quality; it only sets the appearance. The common arrangement is a different shade for the playing area and the run-off area.

On-screen shades are close to the real application but not identical; monitor settings and daylight both shift the colour. The colour decision is made from a physical sample, which is left with you at the survey.

Maintenance and Service Life

Maintaining an acrylic surface is largely a matter of cleaning, and done regularly it extends service life noticeably.

What is acrylic court coating and how many layers does it have?

Acrylic coating is a sports surface system of liquid-applied layers, cured one over another, laid on top of an existing reinforced concrete or asphalt surface. The standard system has five layers: surface preparation, primer, two resurfacer coats, two coats of pigmented acrylic and line paint. Total thickness is 1.0 – 1.5 mm. In the cushioned system, rubber-granule layers are added in between, taking the count to nine and the thickness to 3.0 – 5.0 mm.

Can acrylic coating be applied over my existing concrete court?

Yes — acrylic is by definition a system applied over an existing hard surface. The slab does have to meet four conditions: at least 28 days old, a fall of 0.5 – 1% in one direction, no puddle deeper than 3 mm after rain, and a surface that is not dusting. These are measured at the site survey and the result is reported in writing. A coating is surface work; it does not correct a hollow beneath it, it only covers it.

Can acrylic coating be applied over asphalt?

It can, and it is a common solution. Because asphalt is a porous surface the primer step can usually be omitted and the resurfacer coats bond directly. Newly laid asphalt needs at least two weeks, preferably a month, to weather before coating; bitumen oils rising to the surface cause staining and loss of adhesion under the coating. Where the asphalt shows rutting or undulation, the number of resurfacer coats is increased.

How much does acrylic court coating cost per square metre?

Standard acrylic coating runs at 190 – 390 ₺/m² and the cushioned system at 210 – 620 ₺/m² (as of August 2026, VAT excluded). These bands cover the COATING WORK ONLY: surface preparation, primer, resurfacer coats, colour coats and line marking. Excavation, fill and the reinforced concrete slab are not included — if you are building from scratch, the substructure is a separate item. What decides where you land in the band is the repair the existing substrate needs.

How many days does acrylic coating take, and when can the court be used?

On a standard court, application takes 5 – 7 days, and 7 – 10 days for the cushioned system. That excludes the survey and material lead time. After the final coat the surface is left to cure for 48 to 72 hours; shorten that and shoe marks and line smearing remain. So handover is two or three days after the last working day. Duration depends on the weather: rain or low temperature extends the programme.

What weather does acrylic coating need? Can it be done in winter?

Surface temperature must be between 10 and 35 °C and rising through application; relative humidity below 85%, with 24 dry hours after application. In most of Turkey this compresses the coating season into April–October. It is not applied in winter — below ten degrees the acrylic film does not cure properly and the surface lifts in its first season. Winter is used for surveys and planning, with the work scheduled for spring.

How long after pouring new concrete can it be coated?

At least 28 days. Until the concrete has cured, moisture inside it keeps rising to the surface; acrylic drawn over it traps that moisture and the layer blisters. The wait cannot be shortened, nor skipped with an accelerating admixture. If in doubt, run a polyethylene sheet test: tape a 50 × 50 cm sheet down for 16 hours, and if there is condensation underneath, postpone the work.

How long does acrylic coating last and when is it renewed?

The standard system serves 8 – 10 years and the cushioned system 10 – 12 years. Three things set the life: intensity of use, sun exposure and the maintenance regime. Lines wear faster than the colour layer and are renewed every 3 – 5 years. Colour coat renewal comes every 6 – 8 years; where the lower layers are sound, primer and resurfacer are not repeated — only the colour coats are redrawn and the court returns to its first-day condition in a few days.

Should I choose standard acrylic or cushioned?

Intensity of use decides it. On housing-estate and school courts used a few hours a week, the standard coating is enough; the cost of cushioning does not pay for itself. On club and academy courts training several hours a day, in primary school yards where falls are frequent, and on projects where player health is the priority, the cushioned system is the right choice: knee and ankle fatigue starts noticeably later, and service life is two to three years longer.

Which is better, acrylic or EPDM?

They answer different questions. Acrylic is ahead on the balance of playing quality and cost: bounce is predictable, the surface dries quickly and the cost per square metre is markedly lower. EPDM is ahead on impact absorption, and where falls are frequent that safety difference is real. Choose acrylic for courts used for basketball and tennis by adults or secondary-school age upwards; choose EPDM for nurseries, primary schools and courts sharing space with play areas.

Will the cracks in my substrate come back after coating?

It depends on the type of crack. Surface shrinkage cracks closed with patching compound do not return. Cracks caused by settlement or movement keep moving beneath the coating and eventually telegraph through; a bridging membrane absorbs the movement for a time, but the lasting remedy is the slab itself. At the survey we measure whether a crack is moving and report in writing which method will be used. A warranty given without that distinction is not a realistic one.

Does acrylic coating freeze or crack in winter?

A fully cured acrylic coating stands up to freeze-thaw cycles and does not crack of its own accord. Winter damage almost always comes from water and the substructure: water ponding on the surface expands as it freezes and lifts the coating from beneath. Fall and drainage are therefore more decisive than the coating itself. If snow is to be cleared, use plastic-edged equipment rather than a metal-edged shovel.

How is an acrylic court maintained?

The regime is simple and largely a matter of cleaning. Weekly sweeping: sand and leaves left on the surface act like sandpaper and wear the colour layer. Monthly drainage check: the outfall points must be clear. Once or twice a year, low-pressure washing removes moss and dirt — a high-pressure machine is not used, it strips the surface texture. At the annual crack check, new cracks closed while small are a patch repair.

Can both basketball and volleyball lines be marked on the same court?

They can, and it is the most popular arrangement in school yards. One coating cost lets basketball, volleyball and badminton share the same area. To avoid confusion the primary sport is marked in white at full width and the others in paler colours. Each additional sport brings its own masking and painting round, so line labour rises; on a three-sport court this item can double.
