Who Decides on a School Court, and Where Does the Budget Come From?
On a school court, the party requesting the quote, the party approving it and the party paying for it are often three different bodies. Which one you are working with sets the format and the timeline of the quotation file.
School management
Role: Defines the need, shows where the court will go and accompanies the survey.
The quote is usually addressed to the school management, but the school is not always the one that pays. Two questions should therefore be settled at the first meeting: where the court will sit in the yard, and which source the budget will come from. A quote prepared before the source is known usually has to be rewritten, because it does not match the format that source requires.

Parent-teacher association
Role: Can pay from its own income; spending follows the association’s decision and record-keeping rules.
In Turkish schools the parent-teacher association discusses the expenditure at its board and records it; parents’ associations and school foundations elsewhere work in a similar way. The quote therefore has to be itemised with VAT shown separately rather than given as a single total, and the entity to be invoiced is agreed before the contract. If the budget is not enough in one go, the work can be split over two years: coating first, lighting the following year.
Role: The body the school reports to; a party to investment, repair and approval processes.
In Turkey this is the provincial or district directorate of national education; elsewhere it may be the ministry, the school district or the owning trust. If the work is to enter the authority’s programme, or its approval is needed, the file must follow the institution’s format: bill of quantities, unit price analysis and technical specification. These processes run on a longer timeline than the school’s own; for the work to be ready in the summer break, the application should go in during the spring.

Municipality
Role: Can contribute construction work or materials under a cooperation agreement.
Some municipalities contribute to sports areas in school yards under an agreement, and in return opening the court to the neighbourhood outside school hours may be discussed. If this option is on the table, use will be heavier, so the surface and goals should be chosen accordingly and the agreement should state who is responsible for maintenance.
Role: Can donate funds, or commission the work directly and hand it over to the school.
Whether the donation is cash or a completed project handed over is decided by the school management and the authority it reports to. In the second case the donor is the party to the contract, but the handover certificate, warranty and maintenance instructions must be issued in the school’s name; if a problem arises years later, the school is the one that deals with it.

An on-site survey and measurement, a written assessment of the substrate, and a quote with every item priced individually. A quote that gives the total on a single line cannot be compared; where the difference between two quotes for the same size comes from only becomes visible when the items are set side by side.

Existing Concrete Yard or a New Concrete Slab?
The question that changes a school court budget most is whether the yard’s current surface can carry the coating.
Most school yards already have a hard surface: concrete, asphalt or interlocking pavers. If the concrete or asphalt is sound — no settlement, no deep cracks, no standing water — the court is built with coating over that surface and the budget stays within 190 – 390 ₺/m².
If the surface is interlocking pavers, soil or grass, or the existing concrete has settled, a new reinforced concrete slab is poured beneath the coating. Excavation, fill, drainage and the slab then come in as extra items and the cost per square metre rises to 1.120 – 1.760 ₺/m². Which group the yard falls into is measured at the survey and reported in writing.

Primary or Secondary School? The Surface Is Chosen by Age
Two school courts of the same size can have different budgets depending on the age of the pupils who will use them.
Recommendation: Cushioned acrylic on an existing surface · EPDM for new builds
Primary school
For this age group it is falls, not playing quality, that decide. If the yard surface is sound, cushioned acrylic is in the 210 – 620 ₺/m² band; on a 26 × 14 m court the difference over standard coating is 11 thousand ₺ – 124 thousand ₺. If the court is built from scratch, turnkey EPDM is in the 2.400 – 3.300 ₺/m² band and comes to 1,30 million ₺ – 1,78 million ₺ at the same size.

Middle and high school
PE lessons, school team training and break-time use call for a surface with predictable ball bounce and easy maintenance. Standard acrylic is in the 190 – 390 ₺/m² band; the rest of the budget goes on goal quality and protective padding.
Recommendation: Decide for the youngest user
Age groups sharing one yard
If primary and middle school pupils use the same yard, the surface is chosen for the youngest pupil who will go on the court. If the budget does not stretch to a cushioned system, two items alongside standard acrylic must not be cut: goal padding and the safety zone around the court.

Goal Safety: Anchoring, Protective Padding and Arm Reach
On a school court, accidents usually come from the goal rather than the surface. Four points are discussed separately at the survey.
1Anchoring and foundation
In a school yard a fixed-post goal is anchored to a concrete foundation. If an existing yard is being coated, the foundation pit is dug BEFORE the coating and the concrete is left to cure; a foundation dug after coating leaves a permanent patch in the new surface. Portable and ballast-weighted goals can tip over in a break-time crowd and are not suitable for a school yard.
2Protective padding
Where a running pupil hits is usually the post, not the ring. Impact-absorbing covers are fitted to the court side of the post and to the lower edge of the backboard. It is an item in the 6.000 – 15.000 ₺ band per goal — the cheapest line in the budget and the most expensive one to cut.
3Arm reach
The backboard projects 1,2 m into the court from the end line; the post stays outside the line. How close the post stands to the end line is set by the length of the arm. A short-arm goal puts the post inside the safety zone (2 m), and a pupil driving under the basket runs straight into it. Arm length is chosen by measuring the space left behind the court.
4Ring and backboard
Ring height is 3,05 m for every age group. The most frequent damage on school courts comes from pupils hanging on the ring; a breakaway ring absorbs that load without passing it to the backboard. The backboard material is chosen to resist breakage outdoors. The quote can require the manufacturer’s certificate for the goal under EN 1270 (safety requirements for basketball equipment).
Fitting School Basketball Court Construction into the Summer Break
Coating is applied only in warm, dry weather, and a school is empty only in summer, so the schedule is planned backwards. The months follow the Turkish school year; shift them to your own academic calendar and climate.

Spring term: survey and budget decision

The survey is done while the school is open; only then can you see how the yard is used at break time. The substrate report and itemised quote are prepared in this period so that the budget holder (association, authority, municipality or donor) can decide before the holidays.

Colour, goal type and line layout are fixed before the contract. Coating materials and goals are ordered before the school closes; the first week of the holiday should not be lost waiting for materials.

If there is a new slab: excavation, pouring and curing
As soon as school closes
Excavation and fill take 3 – 6 days and pouring the slab 2 – 3 days. The concrete must then cure for at least 28 days, and this cannot be shortened. A new-slab job that does not start in the first week of the holiday will not be ready for September.

Coating
July – August
Standard acrylic takes 5 – 7 days, the cushioned system 7 – 10 days. In summer heat, application is moved to the early morning; at midday the surface temperature exceeds the coating limit.

Goals, padding and handover
End of August
Installing the goals, fitting the padding and handover take 2 – 4 days. After the final coat the surface cures for two to three days; a job finished at least a week before school opens is ready for use on the first day.
Durations are approximate and depend on the weather. Concrete curing time cannot be shortened; rainy days postpone the coating work.
Where Can a School Court Budget Be Cut, and Which Cuts Cost More Later?
When the budget is tight, the items that can be trimmed are not the same as the items that cost the school more once they are trimmed.
Where you can save
26 × 14 m instead of a full court
If the yard cannot take 19 × 32 metres, the school size is always a better choice than cutting into the safety zone. With a coated area of 540 m², the m² items fall by 11% compared with a full court.
Using the existing slab
If the concrete or asphalt in the yard is measured at the survey and found suitable, the substructure and slab items are never opened. On a 26 × 14 m court that is a difference of 502 thousand ₺ – 740 thousand ₺.
More than one sport on one surface
Adding volleyball or badminton lines is far cheaper than building a second court; extra lines are an item in the 12.000 – 25.000 ₺ band.
Leaving lighting for later
A school court is used mostly in daylight; lighting can be a second-year job. One condition: if a new slab is poured, the cable duct is laid before the slab is cast.
What should not be cut
Shortening concrete curing
Work that cuts curing short to be ready for September comes back as blistering in the first winter. If the timeline is not enough, the coating is postponed — curing is not shortened.
Coating over interlocking pavers
In yards laid with interlocking pavers, each paver moves independently; a coating applied on top cracks along the joint lines. These yards need a slab poured beneath the coating.
Cutting padding and goal foundations
They are a small part of the court budget, yet they are the only safeguard against the most serious accident that can happen on a school court.
The single-line quote
A quote that does not state whether the substructure, padding or lines are included looks cheap; the missing item comes back during the job as an extra charge.

How much does it cost in total to build a basketball court in a school yard?

What is the price difference between coating an existing yard slab and building a new concrete slab?
The difference is the substructure and slab items themselves: 930 – 1.370 ₺/m² per square metre, 502 thousand ₺ – 740 thousand ₺ on a 26 × 14 m school court. In other words, a court with a new slab costs several times more than coating alone at the same size. That is why the first thing measured at the survey is whether the existing surface can carry the load. In yards with interlocking pavers, settled ground or persistent standing water, the slab item is unavoidable.
How much does choosing cushioned acrylic instead of EPDM save on a primary school court?
The comparison depends on the substrate. If the yard has a sound slab, cushioned acrylic is surface work only and costs 113 thousand ₺ – 335 thousand ₺ on a 26 × 14 m court. EPDM, by contrast, is priced turnkey (2.400 – 3.300 ₺/m²) and comes to 1,30 million ₺ – 1,78 million ₺ at the same size. EPDM leads on shock absorption; in primary schools whose budget does not stretch to EPDM, cushioned acrylic is a clear safety gain over standard coating.
Can a school court be finished during the summer break?
If an existing surface is being coated, the job takes about 7 – 14 days including goals and handover and fits comfortably into the holiday. If a new slab is poured, excavation, pouring, at least 28 days of concrete curing, coating and handover together come to 40 – 51 days; in that case work must start as soon as school closes. Because coating cannot be applied in wet, cool weather, work that misses the summer slips to the following spring.
Is protective goal padding essential on a school court, and what does it cost?
In a school yard it is essential. Where a pupil running at break time hits is usually the post itself or the lower edge of the backboard. Padding is an item in the 6.000 – 15.000 ₺ band per goal (2026 market estimate); on a two-goal court it is a small part of the court budget. Just as important is choosing an arm long enough to keep the post outside the safety zone.
If the yard cannot fit 19 × 32 metres, which size should a school choose?
First try the 26 × 14 m school size: the pattern of play is unaffected and, over an existing surface with standard coating, the total is 205 thousand ₺ – 461 thousand ₺. If the yard cannot take that either, a single-goal half court (15 × 14 m) is built; over an existing surface with one goal and its padding it comes to 109 thousand ₺ – 244 thousand ₺. The wrong choice is cutting into the safety zone at the edges to squeeze in a full court.
What should school management look at when comparing quotes?
Before the total, look at four things: how many layers the coating has and which system it is, whether repair of the existing surface is included, whether goals and padding are on separate lines and, if a new slab is needed, whether the schedule leaves time for concrete curing. Two quotes without these four lines are not pricing the same job; the one that looks cheap is usually the one with something missing.
